Stratum Deep tells the fictional story of a miner trapped in a pit post-closure in 1986. Based on the lives and accounts of many miners, it was important to maintain a sense of authenticity particularly in matching the location shooting in the Caphouse Colliery pit.
I split the script into five defined locations within the pit; Train; Coalface; Tunnel; Collapse; and Lift Shaft. With a team of six each day, we managed to build up the layers needed to provide enough texture and filth to match with the authentic mine shaft up North, creating the atmospheric claustrophobia seen in the final film.
